Energizing 4 Expanded Bays at Vung Ang 500kV Substation for Vung Ang II Thermal Power Project

Specifically, in the afternoon of December 17, 2023, 4 expanded bays at the 500kV Vung Ang substation were officially accepted and successfully energized within the expansion framework of the BOT Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant project, of which the investor is Vung Ang II Thermal Power LLC – VAPCO.

The project belongs to Vung Ang Electricity Center, built in Hai Phong village, Ky Loi commune, Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh province. With a total investment of 2.2 billion USD, the scale of 2 units with a total capacity of 1,330MW, the plant is expected to contribute 8 billion kWh/year to average electricity output when in operation.

As one of the contractors implementing the project, Viet Technology Company Limited (VTECH) constructed and expanded the 2-bay 500kV distribution yard, installed equipment and materials for a 500kV transformer substation and line section from the distribution yard to the plant.

Overview of Vung Ang 500kV Substation

The successful energization of 4 expanded bays has made an important contribution to the overall progress of the project, bringing Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant quickly to the grid, contributing to rebalancing the structure of generation sources in the national power system, reducing transmission losses in the system, increasing electricity supply safety, especially in the dry season and years of water shortage. When the project comes into operation, it will be a stable source of electricity supply for Ha Tinh province and some major economic centers of the Northern and Central regions, creating conditions for economic development of the province and neighboring regions.

From the beginning of the year until now, the entire construction and installation package of Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant has been deployed simultaneously to speed up progress and put the Plant into operation and exploitation from the third quarter of 2025. Although constructed in harsh climatic conditions, intense sunlight and long rainy seasons, with the tireless efforts of VAPCO, VTECH and other related units, the project has been ensured with safety and quality criteria as well as construction progress.
